The Fiat Powertrain Technologies is a part the Fiat Group, which includes all the activities related to powertrains and transmissions to Fiat Automobiles (Fiat Powertrain) Iveco (Iveco Motors), Centro Ricerche Fiat and Elasis.
The company was formed in March 2005, following the dissolution of joint venture with General Motors.

The company has activities in nine different countries, it has 16 plants and around 20,000 employees.[2] With output of around 2.9 million engines and 2.4 million transmissions and axles annually, Fiat Powertrain Technologies is one of the largest companies in the powertrain sector.[3]
On 1 January 2011, as consequence of the partial demerger of Fiat to Fiat Industrial, Fiat Powertrain Technologies has been split into Fiat Powertrain (Fiat) and FPT Industrial (Fiat Industrial).
